DeFi summer, 2020. I was running some of the biggest Telegram communities in crypto, and I watched someone wearing my name and my face quietly drain hundreds of thousands from the people who trusted me. A copied handle, a stolen photo, one friendly DM. That was the whole con.

It hit everyone. Whales who should have known better, newcomers who never stood a chance, even teammates who got a message from a “CEO” that wasn’t me. People didn’t just lose money. They lost faith, and they walked away for good.

And this was never really a crypto problem. It’s a community problem. Anywhere people gather online and start to trust each other, someone will try to exploit that trust.
