The biggest Telegram groups in the world have around 1.5 million members, and most of them are dead. That is the honest answer to the question, and it is why raw member counts are the wrong way to judge a group. We pulled the TGStat group rating on September 7, 2026, and the pattern is stark: the top of the list is dominated by betting mirrors, APK dumps and regional job boards showing zero monthly active users.

The biggest Telegram groups by members (September 2026)

• Futboltv, about 1.59 million members. A football streaming group with almost no activity: around 200 messages and zero monthly active users recorded.

• MELBET and 1XBET, about 1.54 million. A betting mirror group with no recorded messages at all.

• ISHBOR TOSHKENT, about 1.29 million. A Tashkent job board, one of several regional employment groups in the top 20.

• MEMES Community, about 1.17 million. Listed as a crypto group, showing one recorded message and no active users.

• Regional job and taxi groups fill much of the rest of the top 50, with member counts between 400,000 and 1.1 million and activity ranging from nothing to a few hundred messages.

Why member counts lie

Three things inflate the participant number. Bought members: services sell them by the thousand and a group that once paid for growth keeps the count forever. Dead accounts: members who joined years ago and never left, or were banned from Telegram without being removed from the list. And bot farms: fake accounts parked in big groups to look real, the exact problem we described in our spam bot playbook. The tell is the same in every case, a huge number next to a near-zero monthly active count.

The biggest groups that are actually alive

Sort by activity instead and the leaderboard changes completely. On the same TGStat snapshot, OKX English had about 397,000 members but roughly 45,000 messages in the period and about 3,600 monthly active users. Binance English had about 346,000 members, 6,800 messages and 3,400 active users. Those are the biggest real communities in the English-speaking rating, and they are a quarter the size of the dead giants above them. Exchange communities top the active list for a simple reason: money moves through them, so people show up, and so do scammers.

How to check a group's real size before you join or list

• Read monthly active users, not participants. TGStat and Telemetrio both show it, and we explained where the rankings live in our guide to top Telegram groups.

• Check messages per day. A group with a million members and ten messages a week is a mailing list.

• Look at the spam ratio. Scroll the last hour. If most posts are links, giveaways and fake support accounts, the real membership left a long time ago.

• Watch join behavior. A burst of joins with identical profiles is a farm arriving, not growth.

Big groups and the spam that follows them

Size is a target. In our 2026 security report, scammers struck a median 7.5 seconds after joining, and the largest active groups took the most impersonation attempts.
